The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah and Surah Al-Fath

asbab Level: intermediate madani-events as-025
إِنَّا فَتَحۡنَا لَكَ فَتۡحٗا مُّبِينٗا
— الفتح 1
Occasion of Revelation (Sahih — Agreed Upon):
In Dhul Qa'dah 6 AH, the Prophet ﷺ marched with 1,400 companions for Umrah but was blocked at Hudaybiyyah. He concluded a treaty on terms many companions found unfair — including returning without Umrah. Muslims were dismayed. On the return journey was revealed: "We have given you a clear conquest." The companions asked: "Congratulations, Messenger of Allah — but what of us?" So was revealed: "That He may admit believing men and women to Gardens..."

What was the real "conquest" at Hudaybiyyah?
  • Opening of da'wah: Muslims could now preach freely after the treaty
  • More people entered Islam in the next two years than in the previous twenty combined
  • It paved the way for the Conquest of Mecca — when Quraysh broke the treaty, Mecca fell in 8 AH
  • A lesson: what appears as defeat may be a greater victory in disguise
Source: Sahih Al-Bukhari (4172), Sahih Muslim (1786) — Agreed Upon
Question: Why did Allah call the Hudaybiyyah treaty a "clear conquest" even though Muslims returned without performing Umrah?
Answer: It opened the door to free preaching, led to mass conversion, and paved the way for Mecca's conquest. The real victory lay in its long-term consequences, not its outward appearance.
