If You Reveal Charity — The Virtue of Secret Giving

asbab Level: basic madani-events as-049
وَإِن تُخۡفُوهَا وَتُؤۡتُوهَا ٱلۡفُقَرَآءَ فَهُوَ خَيۡرٌ لَّكُمۡ
— البقرة 271
Verse: "If you reveal charity, how good it is; and if you conceal it and give it to the poor — that is better for you." (2:271)

Occasion: The Companions disagreed: is public or secret charity better? The verse affirmed both are accepted but secret is better as it is further from ostentation.

Exception: The majority hold that announcing obligatory charity (zakat) is better to encourage others; voluntary charity is better in secret.

Lesson: Secrecy doesn't diminish reward — it multiplies it by removing ostentation.

Question: When is public charity better than secret charity?
Answer: In obligatory zakat — announcing it is better to encourage others. Voluntary charity is always better in secret.
