Ibn Salam and the Question of His People

asbab Level: intermediate madani-events as-060
قُلۡ أَرَءَيۡتُمۡ إِن كَانَ مِنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ
— الأحقاف 10
Verse: "Say: Have you considered if it is from Allah and you disbelieve in it?" (46:10)

Occasion (Hasan): Ibn Abbas narrated: Abdullah ibn Salam told his Jewish people: "You know Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." They said: "We don't know." He asked the Prophet to let him ask them about him before revealing his Islam. They praised him highly. When he declared his conversion they immediately denounced him. The verse was revealed.

The deep revelation: The Medina Jews' stance exposed that their rejection wasn't truth-seeking but tribalism. When the scholar embraced Islam they denied him immediately, knowing his integrity.

Lesson: The truth is sometimes revealed in the moment of testing, not in the moment of claim.

Question: What did Ibn Salam's story reveal about the Madinah Jews' stance toward Islam?
Answer: Their rejection was tribal not truth-seeking — Ibn Salam's character hadn't changed but their attitude changed the instant he embraced Islam.
