Verse: "O believers, do not put yourselves before Allah and His Messenger." (49:1)
Occasion (Sahih): Bukhari narrated from Ibn Al-Zubayr: A delegation from Banu Tamim came. Abu Bakr said "appoint Al-Qa'qa ibn Ma'bad." Umar said "No, appoint Al-Aqra ibn Habis." They disputed until their voices rose. The verse was then revealed.
Authenticity: Sahih (Bukhari)
Lesson: No opinion is to be placed before Allah's and His Messenger's ruling — even if the opiner is a great companion like Abu Bakr and Umar.
Source: Sahih Bukhari; Lubab Al-Nuqul
Question: Who were the two people who disagreed, causing the first verses of Al-Hujurat to be revealed?
Answer: Abu Bakr and Umar may Allah be pleased with them — they disagreed in choosing a commander for the Banu Tamim delegation until their voices rose.
