Verse: "O believers, many rabbis and monks devour people's wealth unjustly." (9:34)
Occasion (Hasan): Ibn Abi Hatim narrated from Ata: revealed about the People of the Book who took bribes for distorting words and changing rulings. Also narrated that it was revealed when companions said to the Prophet: "Let us appoint scribes for the fifths" and he paused, then this was revealed.
Lesson: Using religion to collect unlawful wealth is the worst form of corruption — it corrupts both religion and worldly life simultaneously.
