"They Ask You About the Spirit" — Jews Testing the Prophet

وَيَسۡـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلرُّوحِ قُلِ ٱلرُّوحُ مِنۡ أَمۡرِ رَبِّي
— الإسراء 85
Verse: "They ask you about the spirit — say: the spirit is from the command of my Lord, and of knowledge you have been given only a little." (17:85)
Occasion (Agreed upon): Ibn Masud narrated: The Jews told Quraysh: "Ask Muhammad about the spirit — if he answers he is a prophet, if not he is a soothsayer." They asked him. The verse was revealed with one of the most remarkable answers: knowledge belongs to Allah and you have been given only a little.
Lesson: Intellectual humility is the highest degree of wisdom — acknowledging the limits of human knowledge before the unseen is not weakness but integrity.

Question: Why did the Jews ask about the spirit? What were they targeting with the question?
Answer: Testing the Prophet with a trapping question — detailed answer would contradict the Torah; refusal would challenge his prophethood. The verse came with a higher third answer.
