Verse: "If you do not aid him, Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out as one of two, when they were in the cave — he said to his companion: Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us." (At-Tawbah 40)
Context:- The verse refers to the moment of the Prophetic Hijra when the Prophet (peace be upon him) left with Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq
- The two hid in the Cave of Thawr for three nights; when the polytheists approached tracking them, Abu Bakr said: "If one of them looks at his feet he will see us." — Sahih Al-Bukhari (3653)
- The Prophet replied: "What do you think of two when Allah is their third?" — Agreed Upon
- The broader context: Allah reminds the hesitant hypocrites: if you do not support him, Allah will support him as He supported him when he was alone with his companion in the cave
Lesson:Certainty in Allah does not come from the number of supporters — it comes from knowing Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) in the most isolated of moments was more at peace than an entire army.
Question: Why did the Prophet say "do not grieve" rather than "do not fear", and what is the semantic difference?
Answer: Grief is for the past while fear is for the future — Abu Bakr grieved for the Prophet as the polytheists approached, meaning his emotions were for another not himself. "Do not grieve" addresses a heart that suffers for others, which is among the highest degrees of faith.
