The Forerunners, the First — Characteristics of the Pioneer Emigrants and Helpers

asbab Level: intermediate المهاجرون والأنصار as-124
وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُهَٰجِرِينَ وَٱلۡأَنصَارِ رَّضِيَ ٱللَّهُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَرَضُوا۟ عَنۡهُ
— التوبة 100
Verse: "And the forerunners, the first of the emigrants and the helpers and those who followed them with good conduct — Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him." (At-Tawbah 100)

Context:
  • The verse came in the context of Surah At-Tawbah after mentioning hypocrites and those who stayed behind — so the Quran contrasts the categories and shows the highest degrees
  • Scholars differed on defining "the first forerunners" among the emigrants: some said those who prayed toward both Qiblas; some said those who witnessed Badr; some said those who embraced Islam before Hijra — the apparent meaning encompasses all based on their precedence
  • "Those who followed them with good conduct" includes every Muslim who comes after them until the Day of Resurrection, on condition of excellence in following
  • "Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him" — mutual pleasure: among the highest levels of recompense
Lesson:
Being first in Islam is a preserved rank with Allah — but "those who followed them with good conduct" opens the door to every generation. Excellence in following is a path to sharing in their merit.
Source: Al-Tabari (14/482); Ibn Kathir (4/196); Al-Sadi
Question: How does the phrase "those who followed them with good conduct" open the door of merit to all subsequent generations?
Answer: The phrase encompasses every Muslim who comes after the companions until the Day of Resurrection — its only condition is "with good conduct," meaning genuine following not mere formal imitation. Whoever excels in following the forerunners enters under the verse guarantee and receives their share of Allah pleasure.
