Restriction and Exclusivity — Specification and Isolation

balagha Level: advanced hasr blg-008
إِيَّاكَ نَعۡبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسۡتَعِينُ
— الفاتحة 5
Definition: Restricting one thing to another using specific methods.

Methods in the Quran: (1) Object placed first: "You alone we worship" — placement creates exclusivity. (2) "Innama": "Only those fear Allah who have knowledge" — fear restricted to scholars. (3) Negation + exception: "No deity but Allah" — divinity restricted to Allah. (4) "Bal" (but rather): refuting what precedes, affirming what follows.

Rhetorical effect: Restriction closes the door to any partner or exception — "Iyyaka na'budu" differs entirely from "na'buduka" in degree of exclusivity.

Question: How does placing the object first create exclusivity in "You alone we worship"?
Answer: In Arabic, placing the object before the verb creates restriction — "Iyyaka na'budu" = we worship only You and none other.
