Zakat on Crops and Fruits — Giving the Right on Harvest Day

fiqh Level: intermediate zakah fqh-036
وَءَاتُواْ حَقَّهُۥ يَوۡمَ حَصَادِهِۦ
— الأنعام 141
Verse: "And give its due on the day of its harvest." (6:141)

Ruling: Zakat on crops and fruits is obligatory without requiring the full year — "on the day of harvest" means immediately upon collection.

Rate: 10% for rain-irrigated crops; 5% for artificially irrigated crops requiring effort and expense.

Nisab: Five wasqs — approximately 653 kg.
Source: Al-Qurtubi (7/97); Ibn Qudama (2/563); Sahih Al-Bukhari (1483)
Question: What is the difference in zakat rate between rain-irrigated and artificially irrigated crops?
Answer: Rain-irrigated (no effort): 10% (ushr). Artificially irrigated (effort and cost): 5% (half-ushr). Because the cost reduces the zakat.
