Prayer Prevents Indecency and Wrongdoing

fiqh Level: intermediate salah fqh-062
إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ تَنۡهَىٰ عَنِ ٱلۡفَحۡشَآءِ وَٱلۡمُنكَرِ
— العنكبوت 45
Verse: "Indeed prayer prevents indecency and wrongdoing." (29:45) — Proper prayer doesn't exist in a vacuum — it changes its performer. One whose prayer doesn't prevent them from indecency and wrongdoing has a deficient prayer. "And the remembrance of Allah is greater" — the remembrance of Allah (the essence of prayer) is greater than the prayer itself. Lesson: one who prays but still commits indecency should review their prayer's quality of presence.

Question: What is the practical implication of "prayer prevents indecency"?
Answer: Prayer that doesn't change the worshipper's behavior is a prayer deficient in khushu'. The real effect of prayer appears outside the mosque in daily behavior.
