فَمَن فَرَضَ فِيهِنَّ ٱلۡحَجَّ فَلَا رَفَثَ وَلَا فُسُوقَ وَلَا جِدَالَ فِي ٱلۡحَجِّ
The two verses:
"Complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah. But if you are prevented, then whatever sacrificial animal is available." (2:196)
"Hajj is during well-known months. Whoever undertakes it — no sexual relations, no wickedness, and no quarreling during Hajj." (2:197)
Prohibitions of ihram from the verse:
- Rafath (sexual relations): Intercourse and anything leading to it — the most severe prohibition (invalidates Hajj).
- Fusuq (wickedness): All sins — already forbidden, but their gravity intensifies during ihram.
- Jidal (quarreling): Disputes and conflicts — because Hajj is a time of devotion and turning toward Allah.
Additional prohibitions (from sunnah):
- Covering the head for men — removing body hair — trimming nails — sewn garments for men — perfume — killing game — contracting marriage.
Al-Isar (being prevented):
"If you are prevented" — if the person in ihram is blocked from completing the rites by an enemy or illness — he exits ihram by sacrificing wherever he is.
Question: What are the three prohibitions mentioned in Al-Baqarah 2:197 for the person in ihram? Which is the most severe in ruling?
Answer: Rafath, fusuq, and jidal. The most severe: rafath (sexual intercourse) — invalidates Hajj if it occurs before the first exit from ihram, making it necessary to complete it, repeat it, and offer expiation.
