Types of khatma: Review khatma (reading all memorized in a week/month); Memorization khatma (completing memorization of the whole Quran); Reflection khatma (reading complete khatma while contemplating each verse).
Prophetic Companions' practice: The Salaf completed in a week; some in three days; their peak in Ramadan.
Monthly plan for beginners: One hizb (8 pages) daily = one khatma per month. Link each juz to a month day. Make the khatma a fixed non-postponable appointment.
