Must tajweed precede memorization?
Yes — it is its foundation. Ibn Al-Jazari: "Whoever memorizes the Quran without tajweed has memorized in a deficient form — re-memorizing with tajweed is harder than initial memorization."
The danger of memorizing without tajweed:
- Memorization entrenches performance — whether correct or wrong. "Early memorization is like carving in stone."
- Correcting wrong memorization later is far harder than memorizing correctly from the start.
- Errors in articulation point or characteristic change meaning — "qala" with qaf is not "ghala" with ghayn.
Correct order:
- Learn letter articulation points and characteristics (3-6 months with a sheikh)
- Basic tajweed rules (noon saakinah, madd, tafkhim and tarqiq)
- Then begin memorization — maintaining tajweed from the very first word
For those who memorized without tajweed:
Do not despair — correct what is possible under a sheikh. Al-Ghouthani: "Memorization with imperfect tajweed is better than no memorization — perfection is reached gradually."
Question: What is the practical danger of memorizing without tajweed?
Answer: Memorization entrenches wrong performance — correcting it later is harder. Errors in articulation may change meaning.
