وَٱتَّخَذَ قَوۡمُ مُوسَىٰ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ مِنۡ حُلِيِّهِمۡ عِجۡلٗا جَسَدٗا
— الأعراف 148
Verse: "The people of Musa made, after him, from their jewelry a calf — a body with a lowing sound." (7:148)
Context: After salvation from Pharaoh, crossing the sea, and witnessing miracles — Musa was absent for forty nights in divine conversation. The people worshipped a golden calf.
The phenomenon of religious relapse:
The Israelites witnessed miracles no one else witnessed — sea splitting, clouds, manna and quail, salvation from Pharaoh — yet relapsed in the leader's absence. This teaches: external miracles alone do not guarantee steadfastness.
Ongoing Quranic warning:
This example is struck for Muslims so they know a community's relapse is not impossible. Protection from it: continuous learning and remembrance.
Lesson: Steadfastness needs daily renewal — many people are upright when they "see" the guide and are aware, and stray when care and reminder disappear.

Question: What is the most important lesson from the calf incident after all the miracles the Israelites witnessed?
Answer: External miracles alone are insufficient for steadfastness — uprightness needs continuous internal renewal, learning, and reminder; not just a passing miracle.
