The Companions of the Sabbath — Circumventing Prohibitions and Transformation

Quranic context:
The Children of Israel were commanded to honor the Sabbath and refrain from fishing. They circumvented this: they set up enclosures to trap fish on Saturday and collect them on Sunday. Some objected, others kept silent, and most persisted.

Context:
When they persisted in their circumvention, Allah transformed them into apes and pigs. Those saved were the ones who forbade the evil. The passive ones said to the admonishers: "Why do you preach to a people Allah will destroy?" They replied: "As an excuse before your Lord."

Lesson:
Circumventing prohibitions is graver than committing them directly because it mocks the law. Silence in the face of evil is the brother of consent. The saved ones in this story are those who spoke up and did not stay silent.
