Quranic context: Al-Araf 143
Context: Moses said: "My Lord, show Yourself to me that I may look at You." Allah said: "You shall not see Me — but look at the mountain: if it remains in place, then you will see Me." When Allah manifested to the mountain, it was reduced to dust and Moses fell unconscious. When he recovered he said: "Glory be to You — I repent to You and I am the first of believers."
Doctrinal point:
- The vision is possible — Allah did not say "I cannot be seen" but "you cannot bear it in this life"
- Believers will see Allah in Paradise as established in authentic hadith (Al-Bukhari 554)
- The mountain could not bear the manifestation — how then could human beings in this life?
- Moses did not protest — he responded with submission and repentance: "I am the first of believers"
Question: What does Allah's saying "You shall not see Me" in the verse indicate — does it absolutely negate seeing Allah?
Answer: It negates seeing Allah in this life because of human incapacity to bear it — not in the Hereafter. Believers will see Allah in Paradise by clear textual evidence.
