Quranic context: Maryam 27-33 / Ali Imran 46
Context: Maryam brought Isa to her people. They said: "O Maryam, you have done something terrible — O sister of Harun, your father was not a man of evil and your mother was not unchaste." She pointed to him. They said: "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle, a child?"
His first words: "I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a Prophet" — the very first thing Isa uttered: a declaration of servitude to Allah, the exact opposite of what later extremists would claim about him.
The first words carry meaning:
- "I am the servant of Allah" — declaration of servitude as the very first word
- "He gave me the Scripture" — the book is from Allah, not from himself
- "He made me a Prophet" — prophethood is a divine gift, not a personal quality
- "He made me blessed wherever I am" — blessing in effect, not in independent selfhood
Lesson: Isa declared his servitude to Allah while in the cradle — how then can his person be worshiped besides Allah? The miracle confirmed his servitude, it did not make him a Lord.
