The Wife of Pharaoh — "My Lord, Build for Me a House Near You in Paradise"

stories Level: basic women st-083
رَبِّ ٱبۡنِ لِي عِندَكَ بَيۡتٗا فِي ٱلۡجَنَّةِ وَنَجِّنِي مِن فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَعَمَلِهِۦ
— التحريم 11
Quranic context: At-Tahrim 11

Verse: "And Allah presents an example of those who believed: the wife of Pharaoh, when she said: My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds and save me from the wrongdoing people."

Her name and story: Her name was Asiyah bint Muzahim — she saved Moses as an infant from the river and raised him in Pharaoh's palace. She believed in Moses when she witnessed his miracles and was tortured on Pharaoh's orders until she died.

The significance of her supplication:
  • "Near You" — closeness to Allah matters more than the garden itself — she sought divine proximity
  • "Save me from Pharaoh" — she asked for salvation from her oppressive husband, not from death
  • "From the wrongdoing people" — she did not ask for revenge, only deliverance
Lesson: A believing woman in the darkest environment — physically "under" Pharaoh — chose Allah. Pharaoh's household did not make her a pharaoh. The environment pressures but does not compel.

Question: What is the subtle significance of Asiyah saying "near You" in her supplication, and how does it reveal the level of her faith?
Answer: She said "near You" not merely "in Paradise" — she sought closeness to Allah before the garden's pleasures. This is a high station: the primary request is Allah Himself, not what is beside Him.
