Verse: "You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help"
Reflection:
Classical Arabic would normally say "na'buduka" (we worship you). By placing the object "iyyaka" before the verb, Arabic grammar creates restriction and exclusivity. So: "We worship You and none other."
Why "worship" before "seek help"?
Ibn Al-Qayyim said: "Worship is placed before seeking help because worship is the goal, and seeking help is the means. The means is never placed before the goal."
The shift from third person to direct address:
The surah began speaking about Allah in the third person: "Praise to Allah... Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim..." Then comes the sudden shift in "iyyaka na'budu" to direct address. Scholars say: having praised Allah in the opening lines, the servant has earned the audience — like one who knocks and the door is opened.
Lesson: Combining worship and seeking help is the essence of servitude — no worship without Allah's aid, and no aid except for those who worship sincerely.
