This Worldly Life Is Nothing But Play and Amusement — The True Size of This World

Verse: "And this worldly life is nothing but play and amusement — and indeed the home of the Hereafter is al-hayawan (true life). If only they knew." (29:64)

"Play and amusement":
Not a condemnation of worldly life itself — but of being absorbed in it and making it the goal. Play is permissible and this life is a blessing, but it is a means, not an end.

"Al-hayawan" (true life):
Al-hayawan (with kasra): the complete eternal life that never ends. The Quran uses here the most emphatic Arabic form for the permanence of life — because the life of the Hereafter has no death after it.

"If only they knew":
A divine lament for those who know but do not act on their knowledge. True knowledge is not merely mental information — it is organizing life according to what is known.

Prophetic metaphor: "What is this world compared to the Hereafter except as when one of you dips his finger in the ocean — let him see what he brings back." (Muslim)

Lesson: Do not sacrifice the Hereafter — which is infinitely greater — for the world which is like a drop on your fingertip.
