Feared the Station of His Lord and Restrained the Soul from Desire — Two Gardens for the Fearful

tadabbur Level: basic akhirah td-060
وَأَمَّا مَنۡ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفۡسَ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰ فَإِنَّ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ هِيَ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ
— النازعات 40
Verse: "As for one who feared the station of his Lord and restrained the soul from desire — indeed, Paradise will be the refuge." (79:40-41)

"Feared the station of his Lord": Not fear of hellfire — but fear of standing before Allah who knows everything. The fear of a lover, not a coerced servant.

"Restrained the soul from desire": The second condition — actual restraining of the soul from its desires. Past tense verb indicating real accomplished action. Fear alone without action is incomplete.

The prize: "Paradise will be the refuge" — with "hiya" (it) for emphasis and restriction: no refuge except Paradise.

Lesson: True fear of Allah does not grieve — it produces action. Fear that paralyzes without action is empty fear.

Question: What are the two conditions for which Paradise is promised in An-Naziat 40-41?
Answer: (1) Feared the station of his Lord — Allah-fearing that drives to action (2) Restrained the soul from desire — actually curbing desires.
