O Human, What Has Deceived You About Your Lord the Generous?

tadabbur Level: intermediate akhirah td-062
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡكَرِيمِ
— الانفطار 6
Verse: "O human, what has deceived you about your Lord the Generous — who created you, proportioned you, and assembled you?" (82:6-7)

"The Generous": Scholars note: "Generous" here instead of "Powerful" or "Severe" — as if Allah says: even My generosity did not protect you from arrogance! A painful rebuke.

Answer to deception: Hope in Allah's mercy — legitimate as long as it doesn't turn to neglecting obedience. The difference: active hope and lazy hope.

Lesson: When you ask "why does Allah punish" — remember the right question is: "why does Allah endure arrogance? And His generosity remains despite it?"
Source: Ibn Kathir (8/353); Al-Sadi; Al-Qurtubi (19/243)
Question: Why does Allah describe Himself as "the Generous" in the reproach verse "what deceived you about your Lord the Generous"?
Answer: To emphasize the depth of ingratitude — even Allah's generosity didn't prevent human transgression. More reproachful than mentioning power or severity.
