Today I Have Perfected Your Religion — The Last Revelation of a Complete Way of Life

ٱلۡيَوۡمَ أَكۡمَلۡتُ لَكُمۡ دِينَكُمۡ
— المائدة 3
Verse: "Today I have perfected your religion, completed My blessing upon you, and approved Islam as your religion." (5:3) — Revealed on the Day of Arafah at the Farewell Pilgrimage. When Umar heard it he wept. Three completions in one verse: perfection of religion, completion of blessing, approval of Islam. "Approved" (raditu) — not merely commanded but divinely pleased and accepting. Lesson: whoever seeks a deficiency in Islam to be completed by something else has denied this verse.

Question: Why did Umar weep when he heard this verse?
Answer: He said: we were always gaining in our religion; now that it is complete, nothing is completed without beginning to decline — he feared decline after perfection.
