Verse: "O you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones"
Reflection:
The verse addresses believers by their faith, then assigns two intertwined duties: first protect yourself, then protect your family. The order carries wisdom — one who cannot save himself cannot save others.
Ibn Kathir said: "That is: command them to good and forbid them from evil; do not leave them to wander aimlessly like cattle — teach them and discipline them."
Why "people and stones"? Sulfur stones are mentioned rather than wood because they burn hotter and extinguish more slowly — emphasising the severity of the punishment.
Practical lesson:
- Parents are accountable to Allah for teaching their children prayer and good character
- Neglecting upbringing is not mercy to children — it is exposing them to the Fire
- "Protect" (qu) is an imperative — an obligation, not a choice
