Woe to the Defrauders — Shortchanging in Religion as in Measure

tadabbur Level: basic mutaffifin td-288
وَيۡلٞ لِّلۡمُطَفِّفِينَ
— المطففين 1
Verses: "Woe to the defrauders (1) those who, when they take measure from people, take it in full (2) but when they give measure or weight to others, they diminish it"

Reflection:
The surah opens with "woe" — a word in the Quran's language that describes severe destruction and punishment. The defrauders are those who take their own rights in full but give others short measure.

The broader meaning: Shortchanging is not only in weights and measures — it is in every right: taking from an employee his full time then not giving one's full duty. Demanding faithfulness from others while not being faithful oneself.

"Do they not think that they will be resurrected?": The response to this crime invokes the Resurrection — meaning: if you truly believed in accountability, you would not dare shortchange even by an atom's weight.

Ibn Kathir said: "This is a severe warning for those who short-measure people — this surah was revealed when the Prophet arrived in Madinah, whose people were among the worst in their measuring, and Allah corrected their affairs through it."

Lesson: Before you demand a right from someone, ask yourself: are you giving what is owed of you in full?

Question: Why does the response to shortchanging invoke resurrection and accountability?
Answer: Because the root of shortchanging is weak certainty in accountability — one who truly believes in reckoning does not shortchange
