Nun Sakinah & Tanween — Overview

Nun Sakinah is the letter noon (ن) with sukoon, present in both speech and writing, in pausing and continuing.

Tanween is an extra sukoon noon added to the end of nouns, present in speech but not in writing, only when continuing (not pausing).

There are four rulings for Nun Sakinah and Tanween when they meet other letters:
  • Izhar — before the six throat letters
  • Idgham — into six letters (yarmaloon)
  • Iqlab — before the letter Ba only
  • Ikhfa — before fifteen letters
