Qalqalah — Definition, Letters & Types

Qalqalah literally means agitation/movement.
Technically: vibration of the sound when pronouncing the letter with sukoon, creating a strong echo.

Five Qalqalah letters memorized as: "Quṭb Jadd" (قُطْبُ جَدٍّ)
Qaf (ق), Ta (ط), Ba (ب), Jim (ج), Dal (د)

Types of Qalqalah:
  • Sughra (small): Letter is sukoon in the middle of a word — e.g., "يَجْعَلُونَ"
  • Kubra (large): Letter is sukoon at end of word when pausing — e.g., final Qaf in "الْفَلَقِ"
  • Akbar (largest): Letter has shaddah at end of word when pausing — e.g., "الحَقِّ"
