Madd Al-Leen — Sukoon Waaw and Yaa Followed by Hamza

tajweed Level: intermediate madd tj-061
يُضِلُّ بِهِ كَثِيرًا وَيَهْدِي بِهِ كَثِيرًا وَمَا يُضِلُّ بِهِ إِلَّا الْفَاسِقِينَ
— البقرة 26
Definition:
Madd Al-Leen is the extension of the two leen letters (sukoon waaw and sukoon yaa, each preceded by a fatha) when followed by a hamza in the same word. Its length ranges from 2 to 6 counts when pausing.

The Two Leen Letters:
  • Sukoon waaw preceded by fatha: e.g., "Khawfun" (fear)
  • Sukoon yaa preceded by fatha: e.g., "Baytun" (house)
Distinction from madd letters: madd letters are preceded by a matching vowel (dhamma before waaw, kasra before yaa), while leen letters are always preceded by a fatha.

Rule in Connection and Pause:
  • When continuing (wasl): 2 counts only.
  • When pausing (waqf): Three options are permitted: 2, 4, or 6 counts.

Examples:
• "Shay'in" (Al-Baqarah: 20) — sukoon yaa preceded by fatha before the hamza.
• "Al-Soo'a" (Al-Baqarah: 49) — sukoon waaw preceded by fatha before the hamza.
