Sifat Al-Jahr — The Letters of Voiced Sound

tajweed Level: intermediate sifat tj-087
ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلۡحَيُّ ٱلۡقَيُّومُ
— البقرة 255
Definition of Jahr:
Linguistically: appearance and declaration. Technically: the holding back of breath flow when pronouncing the letter due to strong reliance on its articulation point — the voice is raised.

Its letters:
All twenty-eight Arabic letters except the ten hams letters — namely:
ع ز غ ذ ج ي ب د م ل ن و ر ق ط أ ه ض ظ — nineteen letters.

Tajweed identifier:
Pronounce "b" — you will find breath is held back and voice is raised. Compare with "f" where breath flows freely — this is the difference between jahr and hams.

Quranic example:
"Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence." (2:255) — most letters of this verse are voiced (majhoor), giving it a sonic weight befitting the station of Allah's majesty.

Relationship with other attributes:
Jahr often accompanies shidda (hardness) or bayniyya (in-between), while hams often accompanies rakhawa (softness) — though this is not an absolute rule.
