Al-Fitrah — The Meaning of the Quranic Term and Its Relation to Islam

The comprehensive verse: "So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. The fitrah of Allah upon which He has created people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah. That is the correct religion." (30:30)

Meaning of "fatara":
In Arabic: to split and cleave — "When the sky is split apart" (82:1). For humans: Allah fatara them — meaning He originated their creation, as if cleaving them into existence.

Fitrah in Islamic terminology: The innate disposition and capacity upon which Allah created people — a natural inclination toward monotheism, acknowledgment of the Creator, and responsiveness to truth.

Evidence:

• "When your Lord took from the children of Adam their descendants and made them testify of themselves" (7:172) — the covenant of fitrah.
• "Every child is born upon the fitrah" (agreed upon) — every child is born with an innate readiness for Islam.

Scholarly opinions on the meaning of fitrah:

1. Acknowledgment of Lordship and monotheism (majority).
2. Islam itself (Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim).
3. The natural practices (circumcision and cleanliness) — an agreed meaning in hadith.
