No Compulsion in Religion — Ansari Men Coercing Their Sons
لَآ إِكۡرَاهَ فِي ٱلدِّينِۖ قَد تَّبَيَّنَ ٱلرُّشۡدُ مِنَ ٱلۡغَيِّ
— البقرة الآية 256
Occasion of Revelation (Sahih — Abu Dawud & Nasai):
Ibn Abbas narrated: An Ansari woman who lost children would vow to raise the next child as a Jew if he survived. So some Ansari families had Jewish children by vow. When Banu Al-Nadir was exiled, some Ansari men wanted to either send their Jewish children with them or force them to accept Islam. So was revealed: "There is no compulsion in religion."
Significance:

Significance:
- Faith cannot be coerced — it requires conviction and free choice of the heart
- "Right guidance is distinct from error" — the evidence is clear; forcing is unnecessary for the fair-minded
- This applies to entering the faith initially — rulings on apostasy are a separate matter with separate evidence
