They Ask You About the Spoils — Dispute Over Badr's Spoils

يَسۡـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلۡأَنفَالِ ۖ قُلِ ٱلۡأَنفَالُ لِلَّهِ وَٱلرَّسُولِ
— الأنفال الآية 1
Verse: "They ask you about the spoils — say: the spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger." (8:1)

Occasion (Agreed Upon): After Badr — Muslims disputed how to distribute the spoils. Those who fought, those who stayed with the Prophet, and those who pursued the enemy — all disputed their share. The verse settled it: spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger to distribute as He wills.

The Quranic answer's wisdom: The Quran didn't give fighters what they wanted — it returned the matter to Allah and the Messenger. A lesson: one who fights for Allah doesn't quarrel over spoils.
