"Thus We Have Made You a Middle Nation" — The Change of Qibla and the Balanced Community

وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلۡنَٰكُمۡ أُمَّةٗ وَسَطٗا
— البقرة الآية 143
Verse: "Thus We have made you a middle nation, that you may be witnesses over mankind and that the Messenger may be a witness over you." (2:143)

Occasion (Sahih — Agreed Upon): When the qibla was changed from Jerusalem to the Kaaba, the polytheists and Jews objected: how could Muslims have prayed toward Jerusalem and now abandoned it? Some believers also asked: what of our previous prayers? The verse "Allah would not waste your faith" was then revealed.

Narrated by Al-Bukhari (40) and Muslim (525) from Al-Bara ibn Azib.

Reliability: Sahih (Agreed Upon)

Lesson: Describing the nation as "middle" came in the context of changing the qibla — signaling that the nation's orientation toward its own qibla expresses its balanced, independent identity among nations.
