"Let Not Your Wealth Distract You" — The Story of Uthman and the Caravan
لَا تُلۡهِكُمۡ أَمۡوَٰلُكُمۡ وَلَآ أَوۡلَٰدُكُمۡ عَن ذِكۡرِ ٱللَّهِ
— المنافقون الآية 9
Verse: "O you who believe, let not your wealth and your children distract you from the remembrance of Allah." (63:9)
Occasion (Sahih): Al-Wahidi in Asbab Al-Nuzul and Al-Tabari narrated from Ibn Abbas: The Prophet was delivering the Friday sermon when a trade caravan from Syria arrived — the caravan of Uthman ibn Affan. People left for it, leaving the Prophet standing at the pulpit until only twelve men remained. The verse "When they see trade or entertainment they rush to it" (62:11) was revealed. Al-Munafiqun 9 extended the warning.
Reliability: Sahih — Al-Bukhari (936) and Muslim (863)
Lesson: Trade is lawful — but when it competes with the remembrance of Allah and obedience to Him it becomes a trial. Faith does not sacrifice the Hereafter for the world.
