"They Ask You About the Spoils" — The Dispute at Badr Over War Gains
يَسۡـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلۡأَنفَالِ قُلِ ٱلۡأَنفَالُ لِلَّهِ وَٱلرَّسُولِ
— الأنفال الآية 1
Verse: "They ask you about the spoils of war. Say: The spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger." (8:1)
Occasion (Sahih): Abu Dawud (2737), Al-Tirmidhi (3079), Ibn Majah, and Ahmad narrated from Sad ibn Abi Waqqas: Muslims disagreed after Badr over distributing the spoils. The young fighters said: we did the fighting. The elders said: we provided rear support. A group said: let the matter rest with the Prophet. The verse was revealed confirming that spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger to distribute as He sees fit.
Reliability: Sahih — Abu Dawud and Al-Tirmidhi
Lesson: The first social issue to arise after the first military victory was wealth distribution. The Quran did not defer it — a clear ruling descended: wealth belongs to Allah and His Messenger, who places it where it benefits.
