"He It Is Who Sent His Messenger with Guidance" — A Promise of Islam's Spread

Verse: "It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to make it prevail over all religions." (9:33 = 61:9 = 48:28)

Context: Revealed in Surah At-Tawbah — after the conquest of Makkah and establishment of Islam in the Arabian Peninsula. It was repeated verbatim in Al-Fath and As-Saff — showing it is a continuing promise not restricted to a specific time.

Major interpretations:
  • Prevailing through argument: Islam's supremacy over other religions through evidence and proof — this has occurred
  • Prevailing through power and rule: Islam spread politically across continents — partly fulfilled
  • Future complete prevalence: Interpreted through the hadith of Isa's descent at the end of time and Islam's global spread
Reliability: The verse itself is Quranic text — the historical context is derived from commentary by Al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir, and Al-Sadi.

Lesson: The divine promise of Islam's spread is reinforced by its repetition three times in the Quran — it strengthens the believer's certainty in times of weakness.
Source: Ibn Kathir (4/116); Al-Tabari (14/198); Al-Sadi
