Mut'a in Divorce — The Divorced Woman's Right to Reasonable Provision

وَلِلۡمُطَلَّقَٰتِ مَتَٰعٌۢ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ حَقًّا عَلَى ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ
— البقرة الآية 241
Verse: "And for divorced women is a provision with kindness — a duty upon the righteous." (2:241)

Mut'a: A gift to the divorced woman in appreciation for companionship and consolation for separation — whether consummated or not.

Rulings: Obligatory per some scholars for the divorced unconsummated wife if no mahr was fixed. Recommended per many for the consummated-marriage divorcee. Amount: "with kindness" — according to husband's means.

Wisdom: Honoring the woman, consoling her, and making the parting gracious — "release them with beautiful release" (33:49).
