Circumcision and Its Quranic Evidence

وَإِذِ ٱبۡتَلَىٰٓ إِبۡرَٰهِۦمَ رَبُّهُۥ بِكَلِمَٰتٍ فَأَتَمَّهُنَّ
— البقرة الآية 124
Key verse: "And when Abraham was tried by his Lord with words and he fulfilled them, He said: I will make you a leader for the people." (2:124)

Basis of evidence: The "words" with which Abraham was tested include circumcision — "Abraham was circumcised at the age of eighty." (Bukhari 3356)

Direct Quranic evidence: "The religion of your father Abraham" (22:78) — the Abrahamic Sharia that Islam adopted — and circumcision is among the acts of fitra (natural disposition) referenced by the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Ruling on circumcision:
  • Majority (Shafi'i and Hanbali): Obligatory for males — a Sharia duty.
  • Maliki and Hanafi: Confirmed Sunnah — not sinful to omit but disliked.
Female circumcision: Contested — Shafi'is consider it obligatory; most contemporary scholars hold it as a light sunnah at the minimum level, with emphasis on prohibiting harm.

Wisdom: Cleanliness and health preservation — "Circumcision is sunnah for men and an honor for women." (Ahmad, sound chain)
