Effect of Fasting on Memorization — The Link Between Purification and Absorption Capacity
Scriptural basis:
"O you who believe, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion" (Al-Anfal: 29) — taqwa develops the Furqan, the discerning light that aids memorization and understanding.
Fasting and mental clarity:
Scholarly testimony:
"We saw the clarity of knowledge increase in Ramadan" — transmitted from more than one Salaf scholar in books on seeking knowledge.
Practical recommendation:
Schedule your memorization session after Fajr and before breaking fast or during fasting hours — not after a heavy meal. Consider preserving voluntary fasting if you find mental clarity with the Quran during it.

Fasting and mental clarity:
- Fasting reduces blood in the stomach, which increases brain perfusion in the early morning.
- Mild hunger activates BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which enhances learning.
- Overeating weighs down the body and directs energy to digestion away from thinking.
