Arguments for the hizb method:
Conclusion:
No method is absolutely superior — the best is what you consistently maintain. If memorizing on the Madinah Mushaf use the page. If in a Maghrebi environment or studying in a halaqa using ahzaab, use those. Combining is possible: memorize by page, review by hizb.
- Page method: Memorize page by page (each page = one unit) — common with Madinah Mushaf.
- Hizb method: Memorize by hizb (= quarter of a juz) or half-hizb — common in North African and Moroccan Mushafs.
Arguments for the page method:
- The page is a clear visual unit — the brain remembers word positions on the page.
- Suitable for the Madinah Mushaf (15 lines) — standardized across most countries.
- Easy progress tracking: "I reviewed page 50 today."
Arguments for the hizb method:
- Aligns with the Prophetically recognized division — "The best recitation portions are three ahzaab."
- The hizb aligns with natural stopping points and verse meaning.
- Review becomes "I reviewed two ahzaab" = a quarter of the Quran — clearer measure of progress.
Conclusion:
No method is absolutely superior — the best is what you consistently maintain. If memorizing on the Madinah Mushaf use the page. If in a Maghrebi environment or studying in a halaqa using ahzaab, use those. Combining is possible: memorize by page, review by hizb.
