Linking Similar Verses — A Method for Discovering Subtle Differences
كِتَٰبٌ أَنزَلۡنَٰهُ إِلَيۡكَ مُبَٰرَكٌ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوٓاْ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ
— ص الآية 29
The problem of resemblances:
Most confusing for the memorizer: verses similar in wording but differing in specific words — e.g., "Indeed Allah is Forgiving, Merciful" in one place vs. "Indeed Allah is Almighty, Wise" in an apparently similar context.
Linking steps:
"When a verse confuses you, return to what precedes and follows it — the Quran interprets itself and guides one part to another."
Most confusing for the memorizer: verses similar in wording but differing in specific words — e.g., "Indeed Allah is Forgiving, Merciful" in one place vs. "Indeed Allah is Almighty, Wise" in an apparently similar context.
Linking steps:
- Inventory: Collect similar verses in one place using a thematic index or concordance.
- The subtle difference: Ask: what is the differing word? "Forgiving Merciful" or "Almighty Wise"?
- Context: Why "Forgiving Merciful" here and not "Almighty Wise"? Context teaches the difference.
- Verbal pattern: Mercy/forgiveness context ends with "Ghafur Rahim"; strength/legislation context ends with "Aziz Hakim."
- Targeted repetition: After general memorization, read the resemblances together 10 times comparatively.
"When a verse confuses you, return to what precedes and follows it — the Quran interprets itself and guides one part to another."
