Self-Testing — Test Yourself Without the Quran

سَنُقۡرِئُكَ فَلَا تَنسَىٰٓ
— الأعلى الآية 6
The problem of "illusory memorization":
Most discouraging for the memorizer: feeling memorized while looking at the Quran — then forgetting once the book is closed. Educational scientists call this the "illusion of competence" — you are recognizing, not recalling.

Difference between recognition and recall:
  • Recognition: You see the verse and say "yes, I know this" — this is not memorization.
  • Recall: You are given context without the verse and retrieve it from memory — this is true memorization.
Self-testing methods:
  1. Cue by opening: Give yourself the first word — then continue without the Quran.
  2. Cue by meaning: "What verse mentions fasting in Al-Baqarah?" — retrieve the verse.
  3. Sequential retrieval: What verse comes after Ayat Al-Kursi?
  4. Reverse recitation: Recite surah verses from last to first.
  5. Cover and test: Cover the Quran and challenge yourself to write what you know.
Recommendation:
Do not count a verse as memorized until you can recite it without the Quran three consecutive times without error.
