Hamza Al-Kufi — Biography and Characteristics of His Reading

Biography:
Hamza ibn Habib Al-Zayyat Al-Kufi (d. 156H) — Imam of reading in Kufa. Among the most ascetic and scrupulous. Known as "Al-Zayyat" (oil merchant) because of his trade. Al-Kisa'i said: "I have not seen anyone who recites better than Hamza."

Principal narrators: Khalaf (d. 229H) — later became independent reader #10; Khallad (d. 220H).

Key characteristics:
  1. Tahqiq of hamza: Full distinct pronunciation of hamza in all positions
  2. Sakt (pause): Light breath-free pause on sukun before hamza in certain positions
  3. Imala kabra: Clear lean toward ya in many words
  4. Measured and deliberate style: Among the most careful and deliberate readings
