Advanced Musa Surah: Al-Araf (143)

Moses and Allah's Manifestation to the Mountain — "You Shall Not See Me" and the Vision

فَلَمَّا تَجَلَّىٰ رَبُّهُۥ لِلۡجَبَلِ جَعَلَهُۥ دَكّٗا وَخَرَّ مُوسَىٰ صَعِقٗا
— الأعراف الآية 143
Quranic context: Al-Araf 143

Context: Moses said: "My Lord, show Yourself to me that I may look at You." Allah said: "You shall not see Me — but look at the mountain: if it remains in place, then you will see Me." When Allah manifested to the mountain, it was reduced to dust and Moses fell unconscious. When he recovered he said: "Glory be to You — I repent to You and I am the first of believers."

Doctrinal point:
  • The vision is possible — Allah did not say "I cannot be seen" but "you cannot bear it in this life"
  • Believers will see Allah in Paradise as established in authentic hadith (Al-Bukhari 554)
  • The mountain could not bear the manifestation — how then could human beings in this life?
  • Moses did not protest — he responded with submission and repentance: "I am the first of believers"
