Ibrahim Prays for His Father — Why He Stopped Seeking Forgiveness

Quranic context: Ibrahim (peace be upon him) sought forgiveness for his polytheist father for a long time, then when it became clear his father was an enemy of Allah — he stopped.

Context:
  • Ibrahim promised his father: "I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me." (Maryam 47)
  • After his father died upon polytheism it became clear he was an enemy of Allah, so Ibrahim disavowed him: "And the request of forgiveness of Ibrahim for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of Allah, he disassociated from him." (At-Tawbah 114)
  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) sought permission to seek forgiveness for his mother but was not granted it, yet was permitted to visit her grave — Sahih Muslim
Lesson:
Love does not mean crossing the limits of Allah — Ibrahim loved his father but loved Allah more. Stopping the supplication was not cruelty; it was fidelity to Allah once the truth became clear.
