The Remembrance of Allah Is Greater — Is Dhikr Higher Than Prayer?
فَٱذۡكُرُونِيٓ أَذۡكُرۡكُمۡ وَٱشۡكُرُواْ لِي وَلَا تَكۡفُرُونِ
— البقرة الآية 152
Verse context: "Establish prayer — indeed prayer prevents immorality and wrongdoing. And the remembrance of Allah is greater." (29:45) with connection to Al-Baqarah: "Remember Me and I will remember you." (2:152)
Reflection on "the remembrance of Allah is greater":
Two valid scholarly interpretations:
The greatest transaction in history — you remember Allah and Allah remembers you in the highest assembly. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever remembers Me to himself, I remember him to Myself; whoever remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than it." (Bukhari & Muslim — Qudsi)
Lesson: Never underestimate "SubhanAllah" on your tongue — it is a tree in Paradise, and a dhikr met by Allah's remembrance of you in the heavens.
Reflection on "the remembrance of Allah is greater":
Two valid scholarly interpretations:
- First: Dhikr of Allah is greater than all other worship — it is the soul of all acts of worship (Al-Tabari and majority)
- Second: Allah's remembrance of you (His praise and pleasure for you) is greater than your remembrance of Him — a tremendous honor (Ibn Abbas)
