Surah: Al-Mumtahina (8)
Allah Does Not Forbid You from Those Who Did Not Fight You — Islam and Coexistence
لَا يَنۡهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ لَمۡ يُقَٰتِلُوكُمۡ
— الممتحنة الآية 8
Verse: "Allah does not forbid you from those who did not fight you over religion or expel you from your homes — from being righteous and just toward them." (60:8)
"Be righteous and just": Birr (goodness and kindness) and qist (justice). A peaceful non-Muslim deserves goodness and justice — not merely lukewarm tolerance.
The exception: The next verse forbids alliance with those who fought and aided expulsion — distinguishing the hostile from the peaceful is an Islamic foundation.
Lesson: Islam does not judge people by their religion — but by their stance. The peaceful person deserves goodness and justice regardless of their faith.
