O Believers Avoid Much Suspicion — Indeed Some Suspicion Is a Sin
ٱجۡتَنِبُواْ كَثِيرٗا مِّنَ ٱلظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعۡضَ ٱلظَّنِّ إِثۡمٌ
— الحجرات الآية 12
Verse: "O believers, avoid much suspicion — indeed some suspicion is a sin." (49:12) — The prohibition is on "much" suspicion, not all — since suspicion has two types: praiseworthy (legitimate caution) and blameworthy (accusing a Muslim without evidence). "Some suspicion is a sin" — negative suspicion of others is a sin in itself before being expressed in word or deed. Then the trinity: no spying (privacy sanctity) + no backbiting (honor sanctity) + would you eat your brother's dead flesh? (a revolting image that shapes human conscience). Lesson: when you find yourself thinking ill of your brother — recall this verse before speaking.
