Surah: Al-Muzzammil (2)
Rise at Night — The Private Bond Between the Night-Stander and His Lord
قُمِ ٱلَّيۡلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلٗا
— المزمل الآية 2
Verses: "O you wrapped in garments (1) arise at night, except for a little (2) half of it or a little less (3) or a little more"
Reflection:
These verses were revealed at the very start of the prophetic mission, before the five daily prayers were enjoined. The very first command to the Prophet after "Read" was night standing — as if Allah says: whoever wishes to carry a mission that changes the world must first prepare himself in the depths of the night.
"Al-Muzzammil" (the wrapped one): This is a call by his current state, not by name — carrying tenderness and affection: O you wrapped in your garment, leave the warmth of your bed and rise.
Why specifically the night? The following verse explains: "Indeed, the hours of the night are more impactful and more suitable for words" — the night is harder on the self (greater struggle) and produces clearer speech (purer focus and more sincere direction).
Lesson: Do not underestimate two rakats in the depths of the night — on the scales they outweigh hours of noisy daytime.
